The University of Manchester has gone through a number of iterations since 1824, the most recent 'Mark III' university being granted a royal charter in 2004 and adopting the new colours of purple and yellow.
The present-day scarf of the University of Manchester is purple with two yellow stripes on each side, the outer twice as wide as the inner. It is available from the university gift shop. These colours come from the university coat of arms, adopted in 2004 and confirmed by the College of Arms in 2010.

Since 2004 the university has had at least two different variants of the purple and yellow scarf:
The Manchester School of Architecture is a school jointly administered by the University of Manchester (UoM) and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). Its scarf is made by Ryder & Amies (making it better made than the official UoM scarf) and sold on the Manchester Metropolitan University's online store. The scarf is in the black and yellow colours of the School of Architecture, and with two thinner stripes of purple (for UoM) and light blue (for MMU).

Prior to 2004 the University of Manchester was divided into the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. These institutions had similar scarf colours, based on the arms of Owens College (which were used by its descendent the Victoria University of Manchester).

The University of Manchester has a number of traditional halls of residence which have their own identities separate from the university. One of these, St. Anselm Hall, has a hall scarf in the hall colours of black, red, and white. It is available from the hall alumni association.
